Kibale Forest National Park
Kibale National Park is located in western Uganda near Fort Portal town and covers around 795 square kilometres of tropical forest. It is known as the primate capital of East Africa and is one of the best places for chimpanzee tracking in Uganda National Parks. The park plays an important role in protecting primates and forest ecosystems.
Visitors join guided walks to find chimpanzees moving through the forest canopy. During the trek, you may also encounter red colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and colourful birds.
The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary offers community-guided walks where visitors see birds, butterflies, and small mammals. The experience combines wildlife viewing with cultural interaction.
Kibale hosts over 13 primate species. Walking through the forest gives travellers the chance to observe monkeys feeding, playing, and moving between trees.
The best time to visit Uganda for chimpanzee tracking is during the dry months of June to September and December to February when forest trails are easier.
Kibale is about five hours by road from Kampala via Fort Portal town. Visitors can also fly to Kasese airstrip and continue by road.
