Queen Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the most visited Uganda National Parks and lies in western Uganda between Lake George and Lake Edward. The park covers about 1,978 square kilometres and is famous for its diverse landscapes, including savannah, wetlands, forests, and crater lakes. It is an important destination for a safari in Uganda because it offers a wide range of wildlife and scenic beauty.
The park is known for tree-climbing lions, large elephant herds, and stunning views of the Rwenzori Mountains. It also plays a big role in protecting wildlife in Uganda while supporting local communities through tourism.
Game drives are a highlight of any safari in Uganda. In the Kasenyi area, visitors often see lions, elephants, antelopes, and buffaloes. Early morning and evening drives give the best chances to watch predators hunting or animals gathering at water sources.
The Kazinga Channel boat cruise connects Lake George and Lake Edward and offers close views of hippos, crocodiles, and many birds. From the water, you can also see elephants and buffaloes drinking along the shoreline, making it one of the most relaxing ways to experience wildlife in Uganda.
Kyambura Gorge is a deep forest valley within the park where visitors track chimpanzees. The walk takes you through thick vegetation, and along the way you may encounter monkeys and unique bird species.
The northern part of the park has beautiful volcanic crater lakes. Guided drives and walks offer stunning viewpoints where visitors can enjoy photography and peaceful scenery.
The dry months from January to February and June to August are the best time to visit Uganda for game viewing because animals gather around water sources. The rainy seasons bring lush landscapes and good bird watching opportunities.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is about six to seven hours by road from Kampala via Fort Portal or Mbarara towns. Flights from Entebbe to Mweya or Kasese airstrips provide a faster way to reach the park.
