Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park is the largest of all Uganda National Parks and lies in northwestern Uganda. The park covers over 3,800 square kilometres and is famous for the powerful Murchison Falls, where the Nile River squeezes through a narrow gorge before crashing down. This park is important for protecting large populations of wildlife in Uganda and offers classic savannah safari experiences.
The landscape includes open grasslands, riverbanks, and woodlands, making it perfect for game viewing and photography.
Game drives across the northern plains allow visitors to see giraffes, lions, elephants, and many antelope species. The open landscape makes it easier to spot wildlife compared to forested parks.
A boat safari along the Nile River brings visitors close to hippos, crocodiles, and water birds. The cruise ends near the base of Murchison Falls, where you can watch the water crashing with great force.
Guided hikes lead to viewpoints above the falls, offering amazing views of the river and surrounding scenery. The sound and power of the water create a dramatic safari moment.
Budongo Forest near the park is known for chimpanzee tracking. Visitors walk through tall mahogany trees while learning about forest conservation.
The dry seasons from December to February and June to September are the best time to visit Uganda for game drives because roads are easier to use and wildlife is easier to see.
The park is about five to six hours by road from Kampala via Masindi town. Flights from Entebbe to Pakuba or Bugungu airstrips provide quicker access.
