Birding Safari in Uganda
Uganda is a birder’s paradise. Over half of all bird species in Africa can be found here, making it one of the richest birding destinations on the continent.
Crammed into this incredible country is an astonishingly rich diversity of habitats, from the scenic shores of Uganda’s many great lakes to the lush forests of the Albertine Rift and the banks of the mighty River Nile.
Uganda, the Pearl of Africa is enriched by a formidable 1040 species of birds.
The ideal destination for the birding enthusiasts, 25% of Uganda is also covered by lakes making it the perfect place to sight water birds.
Philip Briggs writes: “Uganda is arguably the best country in Africa for birds, with more than 1000 species recorded in an area the size of great Britain”, a fact that means for birding safaris, Uganda should be top on the list.
Uganda’s top destinations for bird-watching vary from the arid plains of the Kidepo valley to the Rwenzori Mountain range, Semuliki National Park, Queen Elizabeth National park, Mgahinga Forest national park, Lake Mburo national park, Mabira Forest, Murchison Falls National Park, Mount Elgon national park, among many other places where you can discover different kinds of birds that await you on your visit on a Birding Safari.
Some of the bird species that you can encounter in Uganda include; Shoebill, Wood Sandpiper, Goliath Heron, Greenshank, Green-breasted Pitta, African Green Broadbill, Great Blue Turaco, Shelley’s Crimson wing, Standard-winged Nightjar, Short-tailed Warbler. Common Squacco Heron, Common Godwit and a Water Thick-knee among many hundreds of others.
