Uganda to maintain Gorilla permits prices at $600
Good news from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is that Gorilla permit price will be maintained at US$700 for Foreign non-residents, US$600 foreign residents, & UGX 250,000 East Africans unlike in Rwanda, which offers easier gorilla viewing, that decided to increase gorilla viewing permits from US $750 per person to US $1,500 per person for 1 hour with a habituated group of gorillas.
UWA guaranteed all tour operators that they wouldn’t be increase gorilla permit price for the next 12 months. According to the UWA executive director, “Mountain gorillas are one of the world’s most valuable natural resources and their conservation is at the forefront of all of UWA’s decisions. Allowing global travelers the opportunity to fulfill lifelong dreams to see these animals is key to their conservation”. Uganda clearly matins her price for gorilla permits so as to allow all types of travelers from budget to luxury to take part in a lifelong dream of seeing gorillas in their natural habitat. With a rise go permit fees, so many travelers will be left out and yet mountain gorilla survival largely depends on the support and efforts of travelers who come to see those gentle giants in Africa.
Mountain gorilla trekking is the top attraction for countries; Uganda, Rwanda and Congo since they are the only countries where mountain gorillas are found. The total number for this critically endangered species is estimated at 880. Almost half of these are believed to be in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the rest leaving in the Virungas (Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Congo’s Virunga National Park).
