Rwanda is small enough that ten days can cover all three national parks properly, and this route does exactly that without ever feeling like a dash. It begins in the east at Akagera, the country's only savannah park, where game drives across open plains turn up elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and — with luck and an early start — lion and rhino, and a boat safari on Lake Ihema brings you level with hippo pods and basking crocodiles. The road then climbs west to the Virungas, pausing in Kigali for the Genocide Memorial Centre, for the gorilla trek and a morning among golden monkeys in the bamboo. Lake Kivu provides a pause in the middle: a boat trip out among the islands off Kibuye, and a slower day watching the Congo shoreline across the water. The final stretch belongs to Nyungwe, where you track chimpanzees at dawn, walk the suspended canopy bridge, hike to the forest waterfalls and tour the Gisakura tea estates. The last drive back to Kigali stops at the King's Palace Museum at Nyanza before your evening flight.
