About This Tour

Rwanda packs an unusual density of primates into a country you can cross in a day, and this itinerary is built to reach all of them without rushing. It opens in Kigali with the Genocide Memorial Centre, then heads north to the Virungas for the two Volcanoes National Park treks: mountain gorillas on the forested slopes, and golden monkeys chasing each other through the bamboo the following morning. From there the route drops to Lake Kivu, where the pace slows for an afternoon on the water and a morning learning how Rwandan coffee is grown, washed and dried. The second half belongs to Nyungwe, one of Africa's oldest montane rainforests and home to thirteen primate species. You walk the canopy bridge suspended sixty metres above the valley floor, track a chimpanzee community at first light, tour the Gisakura tea estates that fringe the park, and hike to its waterfalls. The return to Kigali takes in the King's Palace Museum at Nyanza, closing the loop on Rwandan history where it began.
